Korean War Veterans Project
The Korean War is a very interesting subject to me. Not just because I am a Korean, but because the war has very distinctive characteristics. It was the first “Hot War” during the Cold War period. It was an ideological war where the two sides fighting represented the opposing ideals of communism and capitalism. It was the first war where the US sent armed forces as a police action to protect the world from the threat of communism. It was an international war that involved more than 30 nations. It was a very bloody war that killed more than 4 million people in only 3 years on a land mass smaller than the state of Minnesota.
However, most of all, it is a forgotten war. Unlike World War II or the Vietnam War, not many people know or learn about the war even though it has very complicated political and international significance.
According to the United States Department of Defense, 480,000 American soldiers served in the Korean War and 36,940 of them were killed. I strongly believe that this war should not be forgotten. Their war experience was as hard as any war veteran, but no one knows about it. Their story is still hidden. I want to document veterans who devoted their youth in Korea and to tell their under-spoken stories of how brave they were in this forgotten war, so they are not forgotten.
